The stanchion posts on a Hallberg Rassy are very strong. From the official <a href="http://www.hallberg-rassy.com/constdet/constdet.shtml" target="_blank">HR Construction Details</a> page:</p>

<p>The original posts on my1983 boat were bedded in a material the HR yard called &#8220;Liquid Metal&#8221;. Over the years, the posts on either side of the lifeline gates have worked themselves loose from people using the top of the stanchion as a handhold while getting on or off the boat. While removing the varnish (for good) from my cap rail, I decided to re-bed these two posts.</p>
<p>I was able to get the loose posts out by drilling with a  foot-long 1/8&#8243; drill bit around part of the post and then I broke up the  bedding material enough to finally pull the post up out of the cap  rail. I then cleaned everything up and re-bedded with thickened epoxy.  The important tip I have to share is to be very careful when you put the  posts back in. Changing their angle even slightly will cause the location of the top of  the stanchion to change significantly and in my case requiring one of the the  lifelines to be re-cut to make up for the difference. I would strongly  suggest pouring the bedding epoxy to within a 1/4 inch of the top and  then reinstalling the washer mounting plate to keep the post steady and  in the proper position while the epoxy cures. Then, you can pour the final amount of epoxy to bring it level with the cap rail.</p>
<p>Despite the need to re-cut one of the lifelines, I am glad I did this to the posts on either side of  the lifeline gate. These posts used to be very loose and are now rock  solid &#8211; giving a much more secure feel when getting on and off the boat.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have done a lot of work on our boat since purchasing her, however perhaps the most interesting upgrade to others might be the replacement portlights I got from <a href="http://newfoundmetals.com/" target="_blank">New Found Metals</a>.</p>
<p>The portlights on the older Enderlein-designed Hallberg Rassys were placed in the hull rather than the cabin top. These portlights had an aluminum exterior frame, a lexan window, and knurled plastic nobs that one screwed down to secure the window. The hinges at the top were plastic and were ridged so as to hold the window up and open when desired. Over time they have not held up well. The aluminum has pitted, the lexan is crazed, and the plastic hinges have become brittle &#8211; a potentially dangerous situation in rough weather.</p>

<p>The same portlight was used on the Norseman 447. Their user group originally contacted NFM and asked them about a custom-made replacement. When I talked with NFM at the Seattle 2010 boatshow in January, they told me about the new portlights made for the Norseman group. I ordered 1 to try the install first before committing to all 8. In short they fit perfectly and I ordered the remaining 7. My new ports are solid, safe, clear to look through, and have a large, non-leaking gasket.</p>
<p>What follows are some install instructions from having put half the ports in. The first took me two days, the second, a half day, the third, 6 hours, and the most recent one, about 2-3 hours. It&#8217;s actually an easy job once you learn some tricks.</p>
<p><strong>Step 1 &#8211; Remove the old portlight</strong></p>
<p>This is actually pretty easy. You will need a large flat-head screwdriver with a square shaft. The screwdriver should be selected so it exactly fits the screws in the interior port frames. These stainless steel screws may have corroded to the aluminum frame over time so they may need a strong effort to remove. That is why you want a screwdriver with a square shaft, so that you can fit a wrench to it for added leverage. Most of my screws were fairly easy to get out. Only a few had to be removed by drastic means (bending and breaking the inner frame).  Once the interior frame is out, it will look like this:</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Now, getting the exterior frame off is easy. Just put a chisel <em>carefully </em>between the hull and the frame on the exterior and give a few taps from a rubber mallet. The frame was glued to the hull with butyl tape which on my boat was still pliable and sticky after 27 years. Once you have a corner up, you can just pull the frame off the hull. On the Norseman appearantly they bedded the frames in 5200. Their removal process is much more involved.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Step 2 &#8211; Grind holes for the trim ring<br />
</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The next step can take a while if you are not slow and methodical. The opening once you remove the old portlight is plenty big enough for the new one but you need to grind out openings for the raised areas on the trim ring that receive the screws. The best method I have found to do this is to use the packing cardboard for the trim ring from the box, enlarge the holes so they are clean, and use the cardboard as a template to mark where you need to grind. You will want to take your time and ensure everything is lined up properly. The very top hole will be able to be drilled with a drill. The rest of the holes are half through the hull and half through the opening so there is no way to drill the hole. A small handsaw then cleanup with a dremel works properly here. You will want to make the openings fairly large so you have some ability to shift the trim ring around. Below is a photo of the portlight dry-fit into the opening. You can see where some of the screw holes just meet up with the hull. By the way, you are going to fill all these openings with butyl.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Step 3 &#8211; Test the fit and make a spacer if desired</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Before you start squeezing sticky butyl everywhere, you want to make triple sure that everything fits properly. The hulls on my Hallberg Rassy 352 are about 1/2 inch thick. Because the interior piece of the port is the male part, and the exterior is the female, you want to decide how much extra spigot you want sticking out. In my case I wanted only about 1/4 inch. Therefore, I made a spacer out of 1/4 inch marine plywood to take up space between the interior piece and the hull. This has the effect of making the hull thicker and therefore has less spigot sticking out. To make a spacer, you simply trace the outline of the exterior trim ring and cut it out. Be sure to make the opening fairly wide so you can be sure to get it on the spigot. And don&#8217;t forget to put it on the spigot before laying on the butyl (like I did on one window).</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The other thing to make sure about are the screws. I found my hull changed thickness slightly from the bow and stern to amidships. So, while I was using 25 mm screws on the portlight in the head, they were too long for the portlight at the nav station. This is another thing to make sure on your dry-fit &#8211; too short and you wont be able to get the screws started when you are compressing the butyl. Too long and they will not compress the spigot and trim ring completely.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Once you are happy with the fit, clean both the inside of the trim ring and the inside of the spigot with acetone to clean off any oils, etc. that may keep the butyl from sealing.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Step 4 &#8211; Load on the butyl</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">At this point you check one last time and then prepare to load on the butyl. The instructions on the NFM site have you load up the butyl from the inside but I found it best to prop the interior part of the portlight into the opening, secure it with a hand clamp, then start pressing the butyl in. The butyl is like a very sticky black rope. It will get on everything if you are not careful. Your job will be easier if you choose a hot day to do this part as the heat makes the butyl more pliable. Stuff it into all the gaps, but only put on enough to have it just ooze out when you compress the trim ring onto the spigot. How much is that? Very hard to explain. After your first two windows you will know. Most likely you will put on too much on the first one and have it ooze out everywhere, then a bit less on the next one, and finally get it dialed in on your third.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">One trick I learned was to press the butyl down evenly using the paper the butyl comes packed in. This will make compressing the ring and spigot easier.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Step 5 &#8211; Seal the outer edge of the trim ring</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Some people use polysulfide to seal the outer edge of the trim ring. I decided to use the foam hatch seal that my local boat store had. I like it so much I switched to the stick on weather seal from my hardware store. If you have prepared things well, the trim ring compresses tightly to the hull so the foam works well and is clean to work with. Don&#8217;t forget to add the foam or you will have to try to pull the trim ring from the butyl (like I did) and almost break it because it was stuck so well.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Step 6 &#8211; Press the trim ring onto the spigot</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">This can be the hardest part if you have too much butyl and/or insufficient means for compressing the two. I did my first portlight with two c-clamps that I had to laboriously pad with wood so as not to scratch the new portlight. Eventually I ended up with the clamps you see below. They are easy to work with, have built in padding, and compress nicely. Just don&#8217;t drop them in the water, as they tend to sink.  The idea is to press the two pieces of the portlight together enough to get the screws started. Then you can use the screws to compress it the rest of the way. Go slowly as the butyl will need time to ooze out. It will continue to ooze a bit for a few weeks after until the portlight is finally well set.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Step 7 &#8211; Clean up the butyl</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The butyl will ooze out around the opening between the spigot and the trim ring. This is good because it means the opening is sealed. If there is not any butyl oozing out (like under the areas where the spigot bends to drain water) feel free to add some. The extra stuff that oozed out can be removed easily with a credit card or plastic paint scraper. The trick is to do it kind of fast so as to pull off the extra butyl without pulling out too much. Again, after a few ports you will be an expert. Any little pieces of butyl on the frame or hull are best removed with strong pressure with a clean rag. Acetone does not seem to disolve butyl very well.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Step 8 &#8211; Stand back and admire the exterior</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">This is what you were waiting for. Admire the new portlight &#8211; how it gleams in the sun from the exterior and looks like original equipment.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Step 9 &#8211; Interior admiration and modification</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Now go down below and open and close your portlight, reveling in the solid feel, sharp appearance, and the self-holding-open window.  However, when you put the teak trim ring back on (except the two forward portlights and the portlight in the galley) you will realize you cannot open your portlight anymore because the trim ring blocks the tabs on the handles! With careful modification it will fit fine and look original. I have tried a few techniques to allow the handles rotate and allow the port to open. I think my favorite is to cut a trench for the handle in the trim ring with a fein-type tool. Mine is from sears and cost $100 but dremel makes one now too. You may want to get your wood worker friends involved if you are anal about your interior (which, owning a Hallberg Rassy, you have every right to be). Just mark it carefully and cut conservatively. With a little varnish, nobody will notice. Here are a few photos (this is the portlight above the nav station &#8211; you can just make out the groves I cut):</p>

Also, remember stainless can and will rust if left to the elements, so be sure to clean the portlights a few times a year with a good stainless steel cleaner (I like the 3m cleaner). <p>In May of 2003, knowing little about sailing,  I bought a 1973 27&#8242; Catalina sailboat. At the time I was working at a company who&#8217;s office looked out over a marina. Recently returned from a two-year trip around the world, my wife and I were happy to be back in Seattle but eager to experience our city in a new way. Looking out my office window at the forest of masts, I slowly got the idea that a sailboat might be just what we were looking for. I didn&#8217;t know if I (and my wife) would like sailing, so I figured the safe thing to do was to buy an old boat, learn to sail, and then if we liked it either fix it up or buy a nicer one.</p>
<p>All journeys begin with a first step. Buying that boat was the  beginning of a path that has taken me far from those early days. <p>Suffice to say that we did enjoy sailing. A lot. But, after a few years we were finding the limits of our little Catalina 27 (both in space, and the types of sailing we could do.) Our family had grown to three with the addition of a daughter. We started to think of sailing with other families. We also wanted a boat that would be safe in all conditions and perhaps be capable of going further afield than Puget Sound.</p>
<p>They say you don&#8217;t pick your boat, but that your boat picks you. I was not really in the market for a new boat but was keeping an eye on <a href="http://www.yachtworld.com">Yachtworld</a> just for fun. In May of 2008, five years after finding Gata, I saw an ad on Yachworld that looked too good to believe. It was for a 35&#8242; Hallberg Rassy 352. After attending numerous boat shows, my wife and I agreed that the Swedish Hallberg Rassys were our dream boat, but they were so expensive I figured they would always just be a dream.</p>
<p>The boat on Yachtworld was in San Diego and listed at a price so low it made me think it had been salvaged or was in horrible shape. On a whim, I made a call and found out that although there was already an offer on her, there was no backup offer yet and I was welcome to make one. Assuming the first buyer would snatch the boat up, I made what I considered a long-shot second offer and then waited for the call that would tell me the other buyer closed the sale.</p>
<p>When the broker called me to say the first buyer had backed out and that my offer was now the &#8216;active&#8217; offer, I was surprised. The broker wanted to know if I was serious as he had several more backup offers from around the US (and was getting calls from Europe). Yes, I was serious I said. I was flying to California for business in the next week and would extend the trip to come down for an inspection and sea trial.</p>
<p>To make a long story (that I may tell in a future post) short, the boat had been neglected but she was solid. I bought her and had her shipped to Seattle. Someday I hope she will take me and my family far from Puget Sound in comfort and safety.</p>
